Treasures of the Hungarian National Museum set
Magyar Posta presents six exceptional artworks kept by the Hungarian National Museum on special souvenir sheets. The souvenir sheets and the associated philatelic products were designed by the graphic artist Glória Hefelle. The souvenir sheets were produced by Pénzjegynyomda Zrt. The new issues will be available at first day post offices and Filaposta in Hungary from 30 August 2023, but may also be ordered from Magyar Posta’s online store. The Hungarian National Museum was founded by Count Ferenc Széchényi in 1802 as the first national museum, which is still the largest museum in Hungary. The neoclassical building was designed by Mihály Pollack. The mission of the Hungarian National Museum is to collect by academic means, preserve, research and display the artefacts of the former inhabitants of the Carpathian Basin up to the present day. The region’s most important and richest collection of archaeological and historical artefacts contains 3.5 million items, including world-famous treasures and invaluable articles from Hungarian history and culture. The aim of the institution is to preserve, strengthen and convey the national memory to future generations. Source: mnm.hu The stamps of the numbered special souvenir sheets show the following works of art: the coronation mantle, the golden stag from Zöldhalompuszta, the Tiszabezdéd sabretache plate, the Monomachos crown, the piano from the Liszt bequest sent to Beethoven as a gift by the Broadwood firm of London in 1817, and the crown of Margaret Island. The main motif of the first day cover is a portrait of the architect Mihály Pollack (1773-1855), the designer of the Hungarian National Museum, and the imprint of the special postmark features the logo of the institution. In addition to the standard, black-numbered edition, a red-numbered imperforated edition of the souvenir sheet and a stamp set are being issued. Alongside the two editions of the souvenir sheet, the stamp set also contains a monochrome version, which may only be purchased as part of the set. The souvenir sheets and the monochrome print are protected in mounts. All the editions in each of the 2,000 sets issued bear the same serial number in the number range between 1 and 2,000. The standard edition as well as the red-numbered souvenir sheets with serial numbers above the 2,000 number range are also available for sale outside the set. The monochrome print may not be used to pay for the postage of letter-mail items.
