150 years of the Hungarian Bar Associations FDC
Magyar Posta is issuing a special souvenir sheet to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian Bar Associations. The souvenir sheet and the associated philatelic products were designed by the graphic artist Imre Benedek. The souvenir sheets were produced by Pénzjegynyomda Zrt. The new issue will be available at first day post offices and Filaposta in Hungary from 28 November 2025, but may also be ordered from Magyar Posta’s online store. After the Compromise of 1867, a series of laws regulating the organs of justice were enacted, among which the rules governing the professional activities of lawyers were promulgated by Act XXXIV of 1874. This Act was among the first in Europe to make membership of a bar association compulsory in order to practise as a lawyer. The first regional bar associations were established in 1875 pursuant to this law. One such association, the Budapest Bar Association, held its inaugural general meeting on 20 February that year with the participation of 430 lawyers. The 150th anniversary has been celebrated in 2025 with national and international events: the Hungarian Bar Association and the Budapest Bar Association organised a two-day event to mark this occasion. Linked to the event was the issuance of a collector coin by the Hungarian National Bank entitled “At the Service of Seekers of Legal Advice –150 Years of Bar Associations”, the renovation of the headquarters of the Budapest Bar Association, and an exhibition at the Hungarian National Museum entitled “In Defence of my Client – Budapest Bar Association 150”, which presented the history of the Hungarian legal profession in parallel with the history of the country. There are currently around 11,300 attorneys-at-law and 3,500 bar association legal advisers working in Hungary, assisted by nearly 500 salaried lawyers and 2,000 trainee lawyers. The bar associations operate in the capital and in the counties in the form of regional chambers, which decide in the first instance on matters of membership, debarment, and disciplinary matters, while the presidency or disciplinary committee of the Hungarian Bar Association acts in the second instance. In the frame of the souvenir sheet there are symbols associated with the work of lawyers, such as the section sign, the law book, a quill and inkwell used in bygone times, and the scales of justice. The design of the stamp within the souvenir sheet features a graphic composition reminiscent of an embossed seal. The first-day cover accompanying the souvenir sheet uses some of the symbols found on the souvenir sheet.
