96TH Stamp Day: Tata FDC
Magyar Posta is issuing a pair of special stamps with different denominations and a numbered souvenir sheet with a surcharge to mark the 96th Stamp Day, which will be held together with the 19th Elgyűsz and 21st Temafila philately exhibitions at the Güntner Aréna, Tata, between 30 June and 2 July 2023. The new issues designed by the graphic artist Nóra Horváth were produced by ANY Security Printing Company, and will be available for sale at first day post offices and Filaposta in Hungary from 30 June 2023 but may also be ordered from Magyar Posta’s online store. Magyar Posta devotes the HUF 300 surcharge on each souvenir sheet to supporting organised stamp collecting in Hungary. Tata, the “City of Living Waters”, has been inhabited since prehistoric times. It is located in Komárom-Esztergom county in the area of the Győr-Tata terrace hills on the eastern edge of the Little Hungarian Plain, in the western fringe of the Gerecse Hills. In recent decades, it has become famous not only for its waters, English landscape garden, shady parks, restored buildings, tidy streets and Olympic training camp, but also for its museums, scientific conferences and regular events, such as the Water, Music, Flower Festival; the Wild Goose Festival; the Baroque Festival; the Open Air Games and the Great Fishing Festival in the autumn. The frame of the souvenir sheet shows a detail of the exterior façade of the Esterházy Palace in Tata. The stamp design of the souvenir sheet uses a detail of the interior of the palace with a painting by the Austrian artist Joseph Hickel (1736-1807) depicting the imperial chamberlain Count Miklós Esterházy (1775-1856). The pair of stamps features the Esterházy summer house surrounded by the English Garden on the HUF 175 stamp while the HUF 250 stamp shows a view of the town with the parish church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The first day cover for the souvenir sheet features the statuary of the Calvary and the Tata Fényes Nature Trail is shown on the cover associated with the stamp pair. The imprint of the special postmark on the first day cover repeats the composition of the “96th Stamp Day” that appears in the stamp designs.
