For sending seasonal greetings in 2025, Magyar Posta is issuing a self-adhesive definitive stamp marked Domestic as the indication of value in standard and special editions. The standard edition is in sheets of fifty stamps, while the special edition is a miniature sheet of five stamps. This year, the stamp design portrays a family gathered around a Christmas tree. The stamp was designed by the graphic artist Péter Vasvári and produced by Codex Értékpapírnyomda Zrt. The new issues will be available at first day post offices and Filaposta in Hungary from 14 November 2025, and may also be ordered from Magyar Posta’s online store. The custom of putting up Christmas trees came to Hungary in the 1820s through the aristocracy. An article published in the periodical Élet és Literatúra (Life and Literature) in 1842 recounts that Countess Teréz Brunszvik of Martonvásár, founder of the first kindergarten in Hungary, was the first to set up a Christmas tree in 1824, following the practice she had seen in Vienna. The new Christmas custom gradually spread among the urban middle class, then the rural intelligentsia, and finally the peasantry. By the 1920s and 1930s, it had become widely popular. In the top edge of the sheet of 50 stamps, there is a barcode, while the other edges bear festive greetings in Hungarian, English, German and French. A grid, which was previously removed during printing, aids separating the stamps from the sheet. The sheets of 50 stamps were produced by flexo printing, with the addition of iridescent spot varnish for the miniature sheet. The central element of the special stamp and the first day cover is a Christmas tree surrounded by a celebrating family, standing with their arms on each other’s shoulders in front of the tree in the stamp design, while the moment of present-giving is depicted on the first day cover. The main motif of the postmark on the first day cover is a snowman. Between 30 November and 26 December 2025, customers may, upon paying the service fee, send their season’s greetings with a special Christmas postmark. This Christmas Postmark service may be requested at any post office. The standard versions of the postmarks using green ink as well as the mark “Karácsonyi Posta” (Christmas Post) can be seen above on the right.
