Hungarian rock classics V: EDDA Művek FDC
Magyar Posta is continuing its series on Hungarian rock classics by presenting the band EDDA Művek, which is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its foundation in 2024. Forty thousand copies of the black-numbered perforated souvenir sheets and 4,000 copies of the red-numbered imperforated souvenir sheets designed by the graphic artist Balázs Hajnal were produced by ANY Security Printing Company. The new issue goes on sale at Filaposta, philately specialist services, certain post offices and www.posta.hu from 4 March 2024. In 1973, the band Griff was formed by university students in Miskolc, changing its name in 1974 to Edda, the title of the mythological and heroic songs of Old Norse. From 1974 Attila Pataky became the singer of the band. After a two-year period, the students stopped playing music. Then, under the leadership of Attila Pataky, the band’s lineup became professional, comprised of the best musicians in Miskolc at that time, later taking the name EDDA Művek. The word Művek meaning ‘works’ is a reference to the fact that the band originated from a typical industrial city in north-eastern Hungary. On 17 December 1983, they bade farewell to their fans with a final concert. However, Attila Pataky held out a promise in the title of the farewell concert album “Au revoir”. A year later, he kept his promise and the EDDA story continued with a new lineup. Making their comeback in Budapest, their journey has continued with uninterrupted success to this day, performing in the Carpathian Basin and in places around the world where there are small Hungarian communities. In terms of record sales, they are undoubtedly the most successful Hungarian rock band. All of their albums have been certified gold and the band is the happy owner of 35 gold, 7 platinum and 4 diamond records. No one before had managed to break down the cultural divide between the capital city and provincial Hungary with such elemental force. With countless concerts, professional and audience awards, EDDA Művek is an influential player in the Hungarian music scene. The legendary band will celebrate its anniversary year 2024 with a tour, one of the memorable and unmissable stops of which will be the already sold-out concert on 9 March 2024 at the Papp László Budapest Sport Arena. The band’s logo appears in the imprint of the special postmark on the first day cover.
