Magyar Posta is marking the centenary of the foundation of the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS) with an issue of a special souvenir sheet. The souvenir sheet and the associated philatelic products were designed by the graphic artist Katalin Dobos. The souvenir sheets were produced by Pénzjegynyomda Zrt. The new issue will be available at first day post offices and Filaposta in Hungary from 17 September 2025, but may also be ordered from Magyar Posta’s online store. The Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS), originally founded as the Royal Hungarian College of Physical Education, is the oldest higher education institution in Hungary in the field of body culture, covering sport and physical education. The foundation of the institution is credited to the minister of culture at the time, Kuno Klebelsberg, who played a major role in the organisation of Hungarian higher education and academic life. The institution has had several names and undergone a number of organisational changes. Since 2021, HUSS has been run by a foundation. The university is celebrating its centenary with a series of events and a communication campaign lasting two years, while Magyar Posta is issuing a souvenir sheet to mark the occasion. Nowadays, HUSS, which began as a training college for physical education teachers, offers a wide range of courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels to more than 3,500 students. The university is the national centre for sports science, and keeps in close contact with sports federations, the government, and the Hungarian and International Olympic Committees. Since its foundation, 151 Hungarian Olympic champions have graduated from the university, and the higher institution is also the Alma Mater of many other world-famous athletes. As part of the development of the campus, which started in 2017, the Dr Koltai Jenő Sports Centre was opened in 2023, providing international-level teaching and research facilities. The series of centennial events aims to highlight the history of the university, its prominent figures and the social importance of sport. Gymnastics is shown on the stamp image, while handball, swimming, fencing, hammer throwing, basketball, running and canoeing are shown on the frame design. A stylised image of a runner appears on the commemorative first day cover, while the university’s coat of arms is featured in the imprint of the postmark. In addition to the standard, black-numbered edition, a red-numbered imperforated edition of the souvenir sheet and an exclusive stamp set are being issued. The last of these includes a monochrome edition, which can only be purchased as part of the set, apart from the two types of souvenir sheet. The souvenir sheets and the monochrome print in the set are protected in mounts. All the editions in each of the 2,000 sets issued bear the same serial number in the number range between 1 and 2,000.
