Magyar Posta is marking the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Vasarely Museum in Pécs by issuing a special souvenir sheet. The special souvenir sheet and the associated philatelic products were designed by the graphic artist Katalin Bódi. The souvenir sheet was produced by Pénzjegynyomda Zrt. The new issue goes on sale at Filaposta, philately specialist services, certain post offices and www.posta.hu from 7 August 2026. The museum of Victor Vasarely (born Győző Vásárhelyi, 1906–1997) opened in 1976 in Pécs, his hometown. It was established in a building chosen by the artist himself, which was originally a canon’s residence erected in 1838. Hundreds of works donated between 1969 and 1991 by the artist, considered to be the father and leading light of Op Art, form the basis of the permanent exhibition. This is supplemented by related works by important masters of international abstract art. The exhibition gives an overview of Vasarely’s oeuvre, from his early commercial graphic designs and various versions of his world-renowned Zebras, regarded as a forerunner of Op Art, through his black-and-white constructive works, to his best-known colourful pieces based on the illusion of movement and space. The exhibition follows Victor Vasarely’s own chronological division, which links each creative period to the natural and environmental experiences that inspired them, and to his visual experiments, while outlining the gradual abstraction of organic forms and the emergence of compositions employing geometric, kinetic, and optical effects. The souvenir sheet features details of some of Victor Vasarely’s works (Réponses à Vasarely album – Tuz, Phyla Bleu, Affiche Aix) as well as a half-length portrait of the renowned artist. On the special first day cover, the open gate of the museum’s main entrance invites visitors to come inside. The special postmark on the first day cover depicts Victor Vasarely’s work Zebras. In addition to the standard, black-numbered edition, a red-numbered imperforated edition of the souvenir sheet and an exclusive stamp set are being issued. Alongside the two editions of the souvenir sheet, the stamp set also contains a monochrome version, which may only be purchased as part of the set and may not be used to pay for letter-mail postage. The souvenir sheets and the monochrome print in the set are protected in mounts.
